The Netherlands has now frozen more than 200 million euros in Russian money, president Klaas Knot of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) told Nieuwsuur on Thursday. According to him, the amount will increase a little further. It involves money from individuals and companies to whom sanctions were imposed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Last week, the counter was still at 6 million euros, but that amount was already higher in reality: a number of things had already happened, but not yet reported.
According to Knot, there is not much more than 200 million euros of Russian money in the Netherlands. “Those assets are not in the Netherlands,” he said.
Belgium has frozen 10 billion euros of Russian money, the newspaper De Tijd reported last weekend. It must be said that a comparison with Belgium cannot be made right: the Belgians play a much larger role in international payments, according to Knot.
