On the first day that it was possible, approximately 470,000 people made their tax return on Friday. Never before did the tax authorities register so many declarations on 1 March, according to a spokesman for the tax authorities. Last year 410,000 declarations came in on the first day.
The first declaration was already one minute after midnight. After almost an hour, almost 16,000 declarations had been made.
“We do not know exactly why so many people have already reported the first day. But it is possible that a number of people will do so because of rainy weather”, according to the spokesman.
Furthermore, the first day is traditionally a popular day for the tax return.
“And possibly also played a part in the country vacation time and people just wanted to arrange their declaration just before the carnival.”
This year 8 million people received an invitation to file a declaration: 6.7 million private individuals and 1.3 million entrepreneurs. You can make a declaration until 1 May. People who make a declaration before 1 April will be notified by 1 July whether they will receive or have to pay back money.
